Clinton High School Graduate Jenna Deep recently received the Syracuse Chargers Roger C. Hahn Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 based on her academic and athletic success. Here are some questions we asked her:
How long have you been with the Syracuse Chargers and what has that meant for you? Please tell us all about your age-group records!
I have been involved with the Chargers for 10 years now (since I was 7 years old). I have 27 age-group records in 6 different age groups. I would have had more if my little sister, Georgia, hadn’t broken a few of the ones I previously had! My records are mostly in throwing events, but there are a few multi-events and one track event mixed in. Being involved in the Chargers has meant that I not only got to compete to meet my own standards, but also to shoot for definitive marks from other people, which has helped push me harder. Being “in the know” about the youth meets has also done a world of good by giving me a chance to compete and improve my skills at times where there wouldn’t have been meets otherwise.
What is your favorite track and field event?
My favorite throw is the hammer, since that event is where my technique is cleanest/most advanced. It is also the throw that my distance is the best in, so that always helps!
What are future plans?
I am currently attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where I was recruited to compete in track and field. I hope to major in archaeology and anthropology, then do archaeological digs for a few years and I eventually work in/curate for a museum. I hope that sports and fitness are always a part of my life, and I would love to help mentor other athletes, particularly young female throwers to show them “Yes, you can!”
Outside of sports and school, what keeps you busy?
Outside of sports, I am a proud Eagle Scout from Troop 44, and I hope to continue helping them out. I love camping, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and just generally being outdoors. I also love learning about anything I can, especially random little factoids, Jeopardy! style.
Is there anything you would like to add?
I would like to add that I am so thankful to the Chargers not only for this really helpful scholarship but also for a wonderful opportunity to grow my skills and knowledge in a sport that I love.
Warm congratulations are extended to this Charger senior for all of her hard work and dedication to achieving excellence throughout her high school years. We wish her the very best in the years to come and much-continued success!
